Dunbrack Street Water Transmission Main Rehabilitation Project

Overview

Halifax Water has contracted with Dexter Construction Ltd to carry out the Dunbrack Street Water Transmission Main Rehabilitation Project. The section of water main being rehabilitated is approximately 1.5 kilometres in length.  The project involves sliplining the existing 1200mm diameter water transmission main with a new 1067mm diameter steel pipe. The contract value is $5.5 million.

The construction zone is located along the Kearney Lake Road-Dunbrack Street Corridor. The northerly limit of construction for this project is the Highway 102 overpass on Kearney Lake Road.  The southerly limit of construction is located on Dunbrack Street between Ross Street and Farnham Gate.

Investigations have determined that this section of the Dunbrack Street transmission main has suffered corrosion damage since its original installation in 1976. This project will help ensure the long term safety and viability of this critical section of water infrastructure.

To help minimize construction impacts to residents and businesses, and reduce project costs, Halifax Water is utilizing sliplining technology rather than the traditional open cut trench and pipe replacement solution.

The sliplining methodology involves inserting a new pipe inside the larger host/existing pipe. The sliplining methodology involves excavating a series of launch and retrieval pits along the pipeline to facilitate the installation of the smaller pipe.

These pits are located at the pipe bends and where new valves and connections are required.

The sliplining solution was chosen over the traditional open cut and replacement option for three main reasons: cost, impact on schedule/residents/businesses and longevity of the future pipe:

  • The sliplining methodology reduces the amount of open cut replacement thus reducing cost of pipe installation and street reconstruction.

  • Less excavation and reinstatement work reduces the construction schedule and associated impacts on the neighbourhood and traffic flow.

  • The older host pipe will remain in place and continue to provide a protective shell around the new pipe.

Halifax Water and Dexter Construction are committed to completing the work as quickly and safely as possible. The work is complicated and challenging.  We appreciate your patience during construction and regret any inconveniences.
