Time of Travel Zones
The well head areas have been subdivided into three groundwater time of travel zones for the purposes of source water protection planning and management. Time of travel zones as wellhead protection areas are based on the calculated maximum time for a groundwater contaminant to reach the wellhead.
The two year and five year time of travel zones represent the areas of greatest concern for protection from biological and chemical contaminants. The well recharge zone represents the entire land area contributing to the aquifer relative to the wellhead location. This zone has been identified for wellhead protection against persistent, mobile water quality contaminants.
Wellhead Area Monitoring
Halifax Water's wellhead area monitoring program consists of maintaining a presence through routine patrols, encouraging public reporting of any illegal or suspicious activities, and raw water quality sampling.
In addition to monitoring finished water at the treatment plant and in the distribution system, raw water quality sampling is conducted on a routine basis at the wellhead treatment facilities. The results are used to identify current conditions, track changes, and support land management decision-making.
