Pockwock Lake is the public water supply for Halifax, Bedford, Sackville, Timberlea, Fall River, and Waverly.
Covering approximately 5661 hectares, the Pockwock Lake Watershed is primarily owned by the Crown, of which approximately 86% is protected by provincial designation and regulations.
The 14% located outside the designated area is subject to the Halifax Regional Water Commission Act and the Municipality of East Hants Regulations and Bylaws.
The Tomahawk Lake Watershed, which encompasses approximately 1550 hectares, is not designated but is primarily owned by Halifax Water (~75%) and protected under the Halifax Regional Water Commission Act, Halifax Regional Municipality Legislation and Bylaws.

Tomahawk Lake is reserved as a potential future supplementary water supply for areas served by Pockwock Lake.
These lands are actively managed by Halifax Water, in partnership with the Nova Scotia Department of Natural Resources.
Pockwock Lake Watershed Management Committee
The Pockwock Watershed Management Committee meets on a regular basis to provide support and feedback to Halifax Water on watershed matters such as:
- Local issues of concern
- Enhancement of regulations & guidelines
- Watershed security
- Local development
- Public communication
- Best Management Practices
