The Pollution Prevention team is committed to making HRM a healthy, sustainable, vibrant community. By taking an active leadership role in numerous environmental initiatives, the team continues to create awareness about our community’s need to work together to prevent pollution at the source.
The responsibilities of P2 staff include inspections of local businesses to educate the owners and operators as to wastewater regulations and to assist them in reducing their wastewater discharges. Additionally, staff will follow up with local businesses to ensure the proper information is being communicated and understood for continued compliance. The P2 team is responsible for the enforcement of the by-law and have laid charges against those businesses which continue to pollute. Staff also respond to wastewater, stormwater and environmental emergencies such as hydrocarbon and hazardous material spills.
The development and implementation of public awareness campaigns are integral to the success of the P2 program. One of the public awareness campaigns that the Pollution Prevention team has been working on is a storm drain marking program that educates the public on the importance of clean water, and how the decisions made by one person make a difference to the whole community. The goal of the program is to encourage people not to put oil, pesticides, turpentine, solvents, paint and other substances containing chemicals into the storm drainage system.

The Pollution Prevention team is also involved in the implementation an Infiltration/Inflow Reduction Program to reduce the amount of extraneous clean water that enters the sanitary system.
