HRM Preparing for Park Restoration Effort
(Friday, June 30/2000)-- Halifax Regional Municipality is receiving a number of calls and offers from groups and
individuals willing to assist with restoration plans for Point Pleasant Park, following the eradication of the Brown Spruce
Longhorn Beetle.
Groups and organizations, such as Prince Andrew High School, in Dartmouth; the Halifax Foundation; and Landscape
Nova Scotia, have made contact with HRM, as well as many other private citizens.
HRM has asked the Point Pleasant Advisory Committee to assist with the preparation of terms of reference for a "Park
Restoration Committee" being established. It is envisioned that this committee will continue to work concurrently with the
joint Brown Spruce Longhorn Beetle Task Force; offer expert advice regarding eradication efforts; and assist with future
restoration efforts.
HRM believes this effort provides an excellent opportunity to engage the community, businesses , individuals and groups
in future restoration efforts, as well as develop an appropriate inventory of potential " helpers." It is also hoped that a tax
deductible Restoration Fund can be established soon to accept donations.
For further information, please contact the Point Pleasant Park Advisory Committee, C/O HRM; the Joint Task Force at 1-877-868-0662; or HRM Parks and Recreation Services at 490-4885.
