Mayor Says Lagoon Clean-Up "Fast Tracked"
(Friday, July 13, 2001)-- Subject to approval from regulatory bodies, sludge removal at the Halifax Regional
Municipality's settling lagoon at Aerotech Park is expected to begin in two to three weeks, Mayor Peter Kelly announced
today.
Mayor Kelly said HRM planned to clean the airport lagoon this summer as part of its regular maintenance program, but
in light of the unusually heavy use of the facility in recent months--- the project has been fast- tracked, including
tendering and implementation.
The Mayor reiterated that no septic sewage from private haulers or sludge from municipally-owned treatment plants will
be discharged into Halifax Harbour.
The Mayor said temporary measures have been arranged to receive septic materials from private haulers at three
municipally-owned treatment plants (Lakeside/ Timberlea, Mill Cove, and Eastern Passage). Initially, the discharge will
go directly into the treatment plants, but HRM staff is looking at other possibilities of discharging it into the collection
system (that leads to a treatment plant) so the sewage will be broken down before reaching the plants to control odor and
provide a better level of treatment.
Mayor Kelly said there may also be some minor changes at the airport lagoon to allow it to receive sludge from HRM
treatment plants. These modifications include a mobile de-watering unit at the lagoon, or transporting the sludge to
stabilization lagoons located at sites other than the airport.
