More Beaches Closed Due to Poor Water Quality

(Friday, August 24/2001) - Water quality test results today from the Nova Scotia Department of the Environment have forced the closure of two more beaches in the Halifax Regional Municipality.

Lake Echo Beach and Fenerty Beach, in Bedford, in addition to Kidston Lake ,in Spryfield, which was closed this morning, are now closed to swimmers due to high bacteria counts. Big Albro Lake and Penhorn Lake, in Dartmouth, were closed previously due to water quality problems.

Due to the timing of these closures orders, these beaches will be closed until the end of this summer season, which is Thursday, August 30,2001.

The Department of the Environment performs water quality testing for the Halifax Regional Municipality and has ordered the closure of other HRM supervised beaches from time to time this summer because of high bacteria counts.
