News Release Halifax Regional Council Pays Tribute to Kate Carmichael
(Thursday, October 18, 2001)-- Mayor Peter Kelly, on behalf of Halifax Regional Council, today extended condolences to
the family of the late Kate Carmichael, who died after a lengthy illness last night.
Mayor Kelly said Ms. Carmichael made a tremendous contribution to her community, both as a former Halifax Alderman
and later as the Executive-Director of the Downtown Halifax Business Commission.
The Mayor said "Ms. Carmichael was a hard-working and zealous advocate for the rejuvenation of the downtown core. She
had a wonderful ability to be able to take a number of divergent views on an issue from a very broad business community
and boil them down into a single plan of action."
He said "Aside from her business contribution, Kate was a great role model and inspiration to many, particularly those who
were touched by cancer. She was very open about her terminal illness and although she sometimes endured a great deal of
discomfort and pain, she never let up as a driving force for the betterment of the downtown. Our thoughts and prayers go
out to her family at this most difficult time."
