HRM Council Supports "Toque Tuesday" Campaign
(Friday, February 1/ 2002)-- Members of Halifax Regional Council will be showing their support for the homeless in
Canada by sporting "Raising the Roof" campaign toques at the start of Tuesday night's (February 5th) regular Council
session.
The blue toque campaign is a fund-raising effort by the "Raising the Roof" organization for the homeless. It was
established in response to a national conference on the homeless in Canada held in 1996, where experts concluded there
was a need for an organization that would play a key role in facilitating shared strategies to end homelessness across the
country.
The fund-raising effort has a direct impact on more than 4,000 men, women, youth and children in need of homes in
Vancouver, Calgary, Toronto, Montreal and Halifax. Proceeds for fund-raising events go to support community-based
agencies engaged in providing long-term solutions to homelessness in Canada.
Halifax Regional Council will be donating a number of the bright blue winter toques to the Metro Turning Point Shelter in
downtown Halifax.
