Kelly (Tuesday, April 16, 2002) - Halifax Regional Municipality Mayor Peter Kelly, wearing a Cape Breton Screaming Eagles
hockey jersey and cap, raised the Cape Breton Regional Municipality flag over Grand Parade at City Hall at 12 noon today.
The flag raising ceremony came about as the result of a "Winner's Challenge " which had been issued by Mayor Kelly
earlier in the month, in support of the Halifax Mooseheads hockey team to Mayor John Morgan of Cape Breton Regional
Municipality.
Mayor Kelly had issued the challenge to Mayor Morgan, at the beginning of the Major Junior Hockey semi-final play-off
series between the Screaming Eagles and the Halifax Mooseheads. The deal struck between the two mayors was such that if
the Mooseheads lost the series, Mayor Kelly would wear the Screaming Eagles jersey at a Halifax Regional Council
Meeting and fly the Cape Breton Regional Municipality Flag over Grand Parade for one week Cape Breton Regional
Municipality was to perform similar honors if the Mooseheads emerged the victors.
The Halifax Mooseheads lost their fiercely contested series with the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles last night in Sydney,
with the final game score of 6-3 and subsequently, the Cape Breton Regional Municipality flag was raised at noon today
over Halifax's historic Grand Parade. Mayor Kelly is also scheduled to wear the Screaming Eagles jersey at tonight's
Halifax Regional Council meeting. And, as the Mayor of the municipality which came out on the losing end of the hockey
semi-final series, Mayor Kelly has also agreed to serve chicken at the A& K Lick-A-Chick in Bras D'Or ,Cape Breton, on
April 22nd, 2002 from 10:30 am - 6 pm.
Mayor Kelly wishes to thank the people of Cape Breton for their warmth and hospitality during the hockey series . He said
" The Screaming Eagles and Cape Breton have a lot to be proud of and we wish you success in your continued pursuit of
the championship!"
