Councillor Urges More Funding for Shubie Provincial Park

(Tuesday, November 5/2002)-- A Dartmouth Councillor said the Hamm government should not develop a new provincial park on McNabs and Lawlor islands at the expense of more historic, well-frequented parks in the Halifax Regional Municipality.

While welcoming the announcement that the two islands in Halifax harbour have been designated provincial parkland, Councillor Brian Warshick said it is ironic that the government would trumpet the move when the second busiest provincial park in HRM-- Shubie Park- has had its funding reduced from over $150,000 annually to less than $38,000 a year.

The Councillor said "The Premier (John Hamm) said the islands have an interesting history. Perhaps he, Tourism Minister Rodney MacDonald and Natural Resources Minister Tim Olive should tour the 150-year-old locks system in Shubie Park, which at one time stretched from one side of this province to the other. An engineering marvel for that time in our history that seems to be forgotten in provincial funding these days."
