Atlantic Mayors Press for Twinning of Trans-Canada Highway
(HALIFAX, Saturday, April 26/2003)-- Atlantic Mayors will lobby the Federal government to twin the Trans-Canada
Highway throughout the Atlantic Provinces and to assume the full cost of constructing and maintaining this national
transportation corridor.
The Atlantic Mayors' Congress, winding up two days of talks in Halifax today, unanimously passed a resolution put
forward by Canso Mayor Frank Fraser, representing the Nova Scotia Towns' Caucus. It urged immediate talks with the
Federal and respective provincial Ministers of Transportation to budget for the twinning and maintenance of existing
Trans-Canada Highway in the Atlantic Region.
Mayor Peter Kelly, of the Halifax Regional Municipality and Chair of the Atlantic Mayors' Congress, said the Federal
government, in particular, should not lose sight of the fact that it initiated construction of the Trans-Canada Highway to
provide Canadians with a transportation link across the country.
