Dr. David Suzuki To Visit With Mayor, Councillors

(Wednesday, May 7/2003)-- Mayor Peter Kelly and members of Halifax Regional Council will host a reception next week for internationally recognized scientist and environmental educator, Dr. David Suzuki.

They will be discussing the role municipalities can play in local and global environmental solutions. There will be an opportunity to engage Dr. Suzuki in discussion about challenges and opportunities and to share information regarding HRM's progress.

Best known for his popular CBC television series, The Nature of Things, Dr. Suzuki has been teaching and broadcasting for over 30 years. His visit to Halifax is being coordinated through the Ecology Action Centre. It's part of a cross-country tour for the David Suzuki Foundation's "Nature Challenge," which builds on his reputation and recognition for raising awareness of environmental issues and explaining the complexities of science in a compelling, easily understood way. The Nature Challenge is helping individuals, communities, and businesses to identify simple things they can do to address local and global environmental issues.

HRM has been taking significant steps to address environmental issues and create a safe, healthy, and sustainable community. It has moved forward with recycling and composting, harbour solutions, promoting bicycle-use and public transit, pesticide bylaw and sustainable landscaping programs, creation and maintenance of urban forests and park areas, and overall efficiency in delivering services
