Committee Proposes Establishment of Point Pleasant Park Foundation
(Saturday, February 14/2004) -- The Point Pleasant Park Advisory Committee is calling for the establishment a not-for-profit foundation to co-ordinate fund-raising efforts for the park
LaJune Naud, Chair of the Advisory Committee, said today that restoration of Point Pleasant Park and development and
implementation of a long-term sustainable recovery strategy will require a significant amount of funding.
"Over the last few years, the Committee and municipal staff have struggled to deal with a variety of difficult Point Pleasant
Park issues, including the Brown Spruce Longhorn Beetle infestation, increased use by the public, infringement on park
property and the damage and devastation as a result of Hurricane Juan. Without the support of donors, it will be
exceedingly difficult for HRM to adequately address these important issues," she said.
The mandate of the proposed Point Pleasant Park Foundation would be to raise money for restoration of the Park and for
other special projects related to its overall improvement and enhancement. It would be directed by a Board of Trustees.
Donations collected to date for restoration of Point Pleasant Park as a result of Hurricane Juan last September are being
held in trust by HRM. The municipality issues tax receipts, upon request, for monies donated to any HRM park.
