New Fields Complement Wright Avenue Extension

(Thursday, May 20/2004)-- Councillor Jim Smith says he is enthusiastic about today's announcement of federal and provincial cost-sharing with HRM for two new artificial outdoor sports fields in District 9.

Councillor Smith says the $3.5 million fields project will complement the municipality's $6 million Wright Avenue extension project.

"These are two exciting projects that will change the make-up of the Burnside Business Park. New trails and bike lanes will link up to existing trails located where the new athletic fields are to be built," he said

Councillor Smith said opening up this area to new organized and passive recreation opportunities will invite more residents, families and visitors to use the existing trails around Frenchman Lake and Spectacle Lake. An extended and improved trail system is a key part of these projects.

"Providing affordable access to these facilities is paramount to the residents of District 9, as well as to all residents of HRM," he said.
