HRM Celebrates Bike Week June 4-12

(Tuesday, May 31/2005)-- HRM’s annual Bike Week will be held this year from June 4 - 12th and a number of events are planned to celebrate cycling in all its forms, from mountain biking to cycle-touring to bicycle commuting.

There are events designed for people of all ages throughout all HRM. There will be family trail rides, children’s bike safety training, mountain bike races, scavenger hunts, antique bikes, and more. Everybody is talking about active transportation and all its health benefits. Now is the time to get rolling, and celebrate cycling in HRM!

Canadian Commuter Challenge
Canadian Commuter Challenge is a national competition for businesses to compete to reduce their single-occupancy vehicle trips. Encourage your staff or colleagues to walk, bike, bus, or carpool to work. Get fit and reduce air pollution! International Trails Day Annual Hike and Bike
Saturday June 4
Join members of NS Trails Federation for the 5th Annual Bike & Hike in Shubie Park to explore the newest section of Trans Canada Trail. (10 km). Helmets mandatory. Register at event.

International Trails Day Musquodoboit Bike Ride
Saturday June 4
Please join us for a bicycle ride along the Musquodoboit Rail Trail. Helmets mandatory. Register at event. Ride all 30km, or as much as you want. Pack a lunch, water, sunscreen, bug-repellent.

Safety On Wheels
Saturday June 4
Youth in grades P-6 can participate in this exciting programme designed to increase awareness of safe cycling. After a complete equipment safety inspection, participants will have their bicycle safety skills tested in a supportive, fun environment. Skills tested include: balancing at a slow speed, riding in a circle, obstacle course, ride and coast, and traffic safety. Children should be accompanied by a parent or responsible adult. Bring your own bicycle. Helmets mandatory. (Some helmets will be available). Prizes awarded to safe cyclists!

Introduction to Bicycle Touring
Sunday June 5
Join members of Halifax Velo Club and enjoy this introductory tour at a relaxed pace. Ride will be supervised by a leader who will carry basic tools and patch kits. Plenty of rest stops. Bring water, helmets mandatory. 1-2 hours (+/- 25 km). Beginners welcome.

Short Track Mountain Bike Race

This is the second in a series of five Fast and Furious MTB races! Great for kids and speed demons alike. The series starts May 31, 2005 and there is a $25 fee for all 5 events. Spectators FREE! Grand Prize is a 2005 Rock Shox Judy TT. Under 18's require parental signature.

Bike Racks on Buses are coming to HRM! Come check out the cool Bike Racks on Metro Transit’s new Metro Link buses. Demonstrations and a hands-on chance to try out the new rack.

Police Bicycle Auction and Community Bicycle Swap
Saturday June 11
Almost 200 recovered bikes will be auctioned off. Also, from 8 - 9am bring in your used bike to put in the auction. Volunteers from the BikeAgain! community project will be on hand to give your new bike a quick maintenance assessment.

Wrap up Ride
Sunday June 12
Celebrate the finale of Bike Week 2005 with this short ride between Halifax and Dartmouth. Meet local dignitaries on the Grand Parade at Noon and then ride as a group to Dartmouth Ferry Terminal Park (7km) OR take the free ferry for cyclists! Helmets mandatory.

Bicycle Festival
Sunday June 12
Continue the festivities on the Dartmouth Waterfront with food and entertainment all afternoon with: From Training Wheels to Two Wheels” a children’s riding workshop; “Effective Cycling” workshop for more experienced riders; antique bicycle display; FREE bicycle repair clinic by Ideal Bikes; children’s games; music by the ‘Wildebeats’; Prizes; and MORE!. Fun for the whole family.
