Passenger Etiquette & Safety
Share the Ride
Metro Transit's campaign to remind passengers of a gentler time, when common courtesy was prevalent in society and no one would think twice about giving up a seat for a senior or holding the door for a fellow passenger.
Share the Ride, Not your Baggage
Passengers with bags are asked to be considerate of other passengers as they manoeuvre on and off the bus. Also, keep seats free for other passengers; bags should be placed on the lap or under the seat.
Share the Ride, Not your Favourite Musk
Please remember that some people are scent sensitive. Many people suffer from allergies to scented products so avoid wearing strongly scented perfumes on board our buses and ferries.
Share the Ride, Not your Playlist
Passengers using IPods or other audio equipment are asked to use earphones and adjust the volume accordingly to avoid disturbing other passengers.
Share the Ride, Not your Conversation
Passengers that need to use cell phone or other mobile devices while on board are asked to keep the conversation to a minimum and at a low volume out of respect for other passengers.
Share the Ride, And the Aisle
If the bus is crowded with a standing load, move to the back to make room for more passengers.

Travel & Safety Tips
Boarding & Disembarking
- Never run for a bus – it's better to wait for the next bus and avoid a serious accident. If an operator sees you attempting to get to your stop and can stop safely, they will. Please be aware that buses will only stop at designated bus stops as a matter of safety.
- Have your fare payment ready upon boarding; exact change is required for cash payment.
- Be careful that backpacks, bags, purse straps or coats don't get caught in the doors as you get on or off the bus.
- In slippery winter conditions, be extra careful getting on and off the bus.
- Never walk directly in front of or behind a bus – the operator and other drivers may not see you.
On board
- Hold on to the grab rails in case the operator has to brake suddenly.
- Keep the aisle clear of tripping hazards such as bags & backpacks.
- Stand behind the yellow line so the operator has a clear view of the doorway and mirrors.
- For safety reasons, passengers cannot be barefoot on the bus, nor wear skates or roller-blades.
- Sit where you can see your upcoming stop, and disembark at the next one if you notice a suspicious person at the stop - if you feel apprehensive, sit near the front of the bus.
- If you are lost or ill, being harassed or threatened, or observe any suspicious activity on the bus, speak to the operator who will radio for help.
Request Stop
Initiated by the Metro Transit Safe Ride Committee, Request Stop is offered to unaccompanied persons, particularly women, children and seniors, using regular service after 6pm.
The Request Stop program is also extended to mobility-impaired customers 24 hours a day, if it becomes reasonably necessary to accommodate them. This would likely occur in situations of adverse weather for for safety reasons.
If you wish to disembark at a location other than a regular bus stop along the route, speak with the operator at least one stop before your desired stop. For safety reasons, please exit via the front door of the bus.
In order to meet your request, the operator must be able to stop safely and obey transit safety regulations. Therefore, the operator has the right to deny your request and choose an alternate stopping point.
