Canada, Nova Scotia & Municipal Goverments Celebrate Grand Opening of the Ragged Lake Transit Center

Metro Transit's new state-of-the-art transit facility is an environmentally sustainable building, designed to target LEED Silver or higher design standards. Some of the noticeable GREEN features include current water & energy efficiency models; with water from the roof being collected in a cistern; strategically positioned windows to reduce the need for artificial indoor lighting; the buildings consisting of at least 15% recycled materials; and low emitting interior paint, carpet and other materials, selected for improved indoor air quality.
The Transit Centre is situated on a 16-acre site and features two buildings: an 119,990 square-foot Operations Centre and a 55,920 square-foot Service Centre for bus maintenance.
The new Ragged Lake Centre will enable Metro Transit to operate and maintain an additional 150 buses, with future space ultimately for a total of 200 transit vehicles. The establishment of the new Centre will also assist Metro Transit in reducing some operational costs, previously incurred by running out-of-service buses back and forth across the Halifax Harbour bridges from its Burnside facility, as the strategically located new Centre will help cut down on commuter congestion and result in fewer greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.
The new Centre is also designed to promote active transportation, featuring on-site bike storage and changing facilities.
