Sidewalk Repair Standards
There are 3 main types of sidewalk repairs used to address sidewalk distortion1 and damage. These are grinding, asphalt patching and concrete replacement. The type of repair is determined during the inspection of the deficiency.
The first option is to grind the edges of the concrete to correct/repair a distortion between two sidewalk slabs; a sidewalk distortion is the offset between concrete slabs. If the distortion is greater than 1 ¼ inches, this is considered a priority work and is tied to a performance standard. Smaller distortions between ¼ and 1 ¼ inches are completed as budget and resources permit.
Grinding is now a 12 month program, but is weather and condition dependent (i.e. the sidewalks have to be free of ice and snow).

Asphalt Patching
In the event grinding will not resolve a hazard, temporary asphalt patching is used to mitigate the hazard until a permanent concrete replacement can be completed. An asphalt patch is laid over the distortion or damaged section creating a smoother transition between concrete slabs.
Asphalt patch goes from approximately April 15 to November 15 depending on temperatures (air and concrete/ground).

Concrete Slab Replacement
Where asphalt patching is used, or a non-hazardous distortion or damage is identified, a concrete slab replacement work order is generated. These work orders are added to the work planning system and are repaired as budget and resources permit.

Concrete replacements are in effect from May – October.
