Street Maintenance

Though safety is the main focus of street maintenance, additional efforts are put forth in support of functionality, public services and aesthetic streetscapes.

Street maintenance services include: street sweeping, street service truck, litter pick-up, leaf pick-up (seasonal May-October), asphalt patching, gravel road and guide rail maintenance.

Sidewalk Maintenance

Municipal Operations works hard to maintain over 850 kilometres of sidewalk to ensure they are safe for pedestrians. Sidewalks vary in surface material and can be concrete, exposed aggregate, asphalt or brick. These same crews maintain walkways, curbs, and gutters made of similar material types.

With the exception of grinding concrete sidewalks, this maintenance program operates from April to November.

  • Concrete sidewalks
There are 3 main types of sidewalk repairs used to address sidewalk distortions and damage. These are grinding, asphalt patching and concrete replacement. The type of repair is determined during the inspection of the deficiency.

  • Asphalt sidewalks

Asphalt sidewalk and walkway surfaces are maintained to ensure safe passage of pedestrians. Hazards are addressed as priority items and all other secondary repairs are made subject to the availability of resources.

Curb and Gutter Maintenance

Repairs to damaged, deteriorated or heaved sections of curb and gutter are undertaken to ensure proper street drainage is maintained. Hazards are addressed as priority items and all other secondary repairs are made subject to the availability of resources.

Pedestrian Ramp Maintenance

Pedestrian ramps are repaired as required to eliminate potential hazards to users. New installations are installed on intersecting streets and/or as approved by Traffic Services. Potentially hazardous ramps and new ramp installations in capital sidewalk blocks are temporarily repaired/installed with asphalt material as weather conditions and work scheduling permits.
