2012 Welcome BBQ
Approximately 1000 newcomers and current residents enjoyed the Annual Welcome BBQ on the South Commons on Saturday July 7th. The rain could not stop anyone from having an amazing time laughing, eating great food, and listening to invigorating music.
A sample of the fare at this free, family event was hotdogs, fresh corn, sweet potato, and cake, all served by volunteers!
Enthusiastic residents enjoyed the sights and sounds of cultural music and dancing from Samba Nova and a Nepali singing and dancing group. Everyone had a chance to get in on the action with Zumba dancing. There was also plenty to do for the kids such as face painting, soccer, badminton, parachute games and free books!
Cruzis, the horse from Mounted Patrol, and Steeler, the dog from the Police Canine Unite, and their officers from Halifax Regional Police paid us a visit and showed us their moves.
The Welcome BBQ is planned and delivered each year by a committee representing many organizations that serve newcomers in our region.

2011 Welcome BBQ
On Saturday, July 16th approximately 700 residents participated in the
6th Annual Welcome BBQ making this years event a tremendous success!
The Halifax South Commons provided a wonderful venue - central, safe
and welcoming, with a truly neighbourhood feel. Hotdogs by the dozen in
every variety imaginable were prepared and served by volunteers.
Residents were treated to fresh corn and fruit, sweet potato slices, and
cake! Samba Nova, Concrete Roots and Florence Simmons Zumba entertained
the enthusiastic crowd.
Colourful tents hosted art-making, books and
story-telling, and face-painting. Children's artwork depicted "what a
home is". The paintings and words added a special touch as they were
hung along clotheslines between the large shade trees. Faily games, Falun Dafa demonstration, a big fire truck and a special visit by police on
horseback were all special attractions.
The free, family event brings new residents together with other local
residents from the community. At this year's event many established
newcomers were welcoming those who have newly arrived from countries
around the world, including refugees. And we saw even more involvement
than ever from the local community.
The Welcome BBQ is planned and delivered each year by volunteers from
the many organizations within the region providing settlement and
integration services to newcomers. Increasingly, the business community is also supporting the event.
