About the Pilot Project

On September 25, 2012, Halifax Regional Council voted unanimously in favour of a 12-month Open Data Pilot Project that has enabled the public release of 17 HRM datasets free of charge. It’s part of Council's commitment towards making municipal information more open, transparent and accessible as the current Data Dissemination Policy limits data access to defined groups and attaches fees depending on the category of clients.

As part of the Pilot, HRM will host an open data application contest from July-November 2013 to inspire the development of innovative, interesting and user-friendly applications using HRM data.

Following an evaluation of the initial data release and results of the application contest, HRM staff will bring forward a report to Regional Council with recommendations on how to move forward on expanding HRM’s open data program.

Something for everyone

Whether you are a software developer or a non-technical user, the Open Data catalogue has something for you.

  • Anyone can easily create a map based on geo data using either Google Maps, Bing Maps or ESRI
  • User-created visualizations become part of the dataset metadata layer and help enrich the data
  • Contribute by providing ratings and comments on datasets
  • Use the social player to share your mashups and visualizations of data through your social networks, blog or websites.

The Catalogue

HRM’s Open Data Catalogue is powered by The Socrata Open Data Platform™, the most widely-adopted Open Data solution in government.

This platform has the following features:

  • An intuitive, familiar user interface that provides data sorting, searching, and filtering capabilities, as well as interactive previews
  • Dynamic data
  • Transformed datum to North American standard (NAD83 CSRS – Google and Bing friendly and Provincial standard)
  • Open Data standard format metadata (metadata tailored to wider audience)
  • Open, standards-based, RESTful application programming interface (API)

LiDAR DEM Files

The LiDAR DEM files are too large to include in the Catalogue. You can receive a copy of these files by sending a request to opendata@halifax.ca
