The municipality is developing a park master plan for Fort Needham Memorial Park. The 6.3 hectare (15.5 acre) park is located in Halifax’s North End. Set on the top of a glacial drumlin, Halifax’s Other Hill has born witness to the history and evolution of Halifax, from its strategic location for defending the city and historic naval dockyards, to the devastation of the Halifax Explosion on December 6, 1917 and the rebirth of the community in the aftermath.

Fort Needham croppedWith the upcoming 100th anniversary of the Halifax Explosion in 2017, this is an opportune time to develop an overall master plan for the Park. There are numerous sites throughout Halifax and Dartmouth that are intimately associated with the events of the Halifax Explosion. Fort Needham Memorial Park is the most notable of these sites, with the ceremonial gathering every year on December 6th at the base of the Halifax Explosion Memorial Bell Tower. It is expected that the park will play a major role in the centennial commemorations in 2017.

The purpose of the master plan will be to develop a design vision for the Park that balances the national and regional commemorative significance with the local recreational needs and open space objectives. Through a comprehensive analysis, and a meaningful public engagement process, the master plan will synthesize the many roles and identities of this park and put forward a clear vision that helps us understand our past and meet the future needs of a changing and growing population. This plan will give the municipality a solid framework to make decisions regarding future investment, protection, maintenance and development of the park.
