Some General By-law Requirements
The Pesticide By-law requires you to:
1. Give written notice to all neighbours within 50 metres of your property 24 hours before pesticide use starts.
2. Get written permission from your neighbours in order to use pesticides within 2 metres of a neighbour’s property.
3. Keep pesticides 5 metres away from all mailboxes or facilities which contain a post office and bus stops.
4. Do not use pesticides on City property such as the curb strip.
5. Put signage up at least 24 hours before applying pesticides and leave them up for 4 complete days afterwards.
6. Do not apply pesticides on shrubs that are 2 or more metres tall when wind exceeds 8 km/hr. No pesticides may be used at all anywhere if it is windy - 18 km/hr or more (about 12 mph) - or warmer than 27 Celsius - or raining.
7. Warning signs shall be prominently placed and signs shall face all streets and within 3 metres of all next-door property lines. If your property edges are longer than about 16 metres, you must buy enough signs to post one every 16 metres on each side.
I Agree
It would be neighbourly to notify anyone within 100 metres of your home who you know is sensitive to pesticides or who have homes with children, pets, expectant mothers, senior citizens or people with respiratory difficulties, etc., so they are able to leave their homes or seal them if needed.
There are requirements that signs with specific print size must be posted. Be certain that all the information is printed both clearly and large enough for a person in a passing vehicle to read.
You can buy these signs at your local stores.
