HRM initiated application to consider amending the Bedford Municipal Planning Strategy and Land Use By-law for 345 Kearney Lake Road to reflect the institutional use of the property.

Overview

North West Community Council has requested staff to consider changing the Bedford MPS and LUB to reflect the institutional use of 345 Kearney Lake Road, Bedford (Minutes). During the 1990s the Diman Association of Canada established their community centre at 345 Kearney Lake Road. This property is currently zoned RR (Residential Reserve) and designated BWSPS (Bedford West Secondary Planning Strategy), which only allows for single unit dwellings.

Process

This proposal is being considered under the plan amendment process.  An initiation staff report was tabled at Regional Council on August 4, 2009. Minutes

Status

A public meeting hosted by the North West Planning Advisory Committee (NWPAC) was scheduled for September 23, 2009. As no members of the public were in attendance, the meeting was cancelled. Minutes

A staff report has been reviewed by the North West Planning Advisory Committee (NWPAC), North West Community Council (NWCC) and Regional Council. Staff Report

Regional Council has scheduled a public hearing for March 15th, 2011 at 6:00 pm. All oral and written submissions will be considered at that time. Written submissions may be forwarded by mail to the Municipal Clerk, P.O. Box 1749, Halifax, Nova Scotia, B3J 3A5; by fax, 490-4208; or by e-mail. Written submissions should be received by the Municipal Clerk's office as early as possible and not later than 3:00 p.m. on the scheduled date of the public hearing.

Before the public hearing, a mailout will be sent to property owners who received written notice of the public information meeting, as well as any individuals who signed up at the public information meeting. In addition, the public hearing will be advertised in the Municipal Notices section of the newspaper.
