People who respond to emergencies often deal with traumatic events and stressful situations; such as the death of a child, the loss of a co-worker or a multiple casualty situation. Sometimes the event is so overwhelming routine methods of coping become ineffective.
The Employee Assistance Program (EAP) provides confidential support for employees who have experienced personal, professional and/or health related challenges. The goal is to provide early intervention, support and encourage employees to seek the assistance they require.
Our Employee Assistance Program consists of 25 referral agents. These agents are either current or retired departmental staff and may be either police officers or civilians. They are on call 24 hours-a-day, seven days-a-week to respond to the needs of employees.
These referral agents are trained in critical incident stress (CIS) and suicide intervention among other things. They often act as a sounding board for employees and refer them to other human resources agencies.
EAP members also take part in CIS debriefings after critical incidents such as officers responding to murder scenes or Emergency Response Team incidents.
