Training

The Halifax Regional Police Training Unit ensures mandatory training is completed by members each year (such as firearms re-certification, use of force, pepper-spray, etc.)  Many of these training schedules are mandated by the Nova Scotia Department of Justice.

Other training courses are offered officers on a regular basis, as well as job-specific training such as bike patrol courses, policing philosophy courses, family violence awareness and media training.

In 2001, the Training Section conducted its first Police Science Program.  Twenty-four fully trained cadets graduated from the intense nine-month course.  The popularity of the Police Science Program has grown since its inception and the Training Section will continue to deliver this Program to meet the department's future policing needs.

This unit also selects candidates to attend training courses offered by other departments and agencies to fulfill departmental needs.
