Cops 'n Kids Program

What is Cops 'n Kids?

Launched in 2004, the Cops ’n Kids program is designed to create positive interactions between Halifax Regional Police and Halifax District RCMP and children identified by their schools as succeeding despite facing challenges.

Who can participate?

There are two levels of youths who take part in Cops ’n Kids – youth leaders and youth participants. Up to 16 youth leaders (senior high students) are selected to serve as teen role models for the younger participants. This allows the children to interact with older students who understand many of the issues facing youth today. Youth leaders are given leadership training and assist with all activities, increasing their empowerment, social awareness and
self-identity.

Based on school recommendations, approximately 60 youth participants are chosen from students entering grade seven in the upcoming school year. The progression to junior high school is a very vulnerable time for children, a time when positive experiences have a great impact on shaping their outlook and choices in life. The children selected benefit from positive interactions with other youths and adults as they deal with issues of negative peer pressure, bullying and low esteem.

What does the program involve?

Originally, Cops ’n Kids was a one-time event that involved a weekend at the Tim Horton Children’s Camp in Tatamagouche, Nova Scotia. While the Camp in itself combines sports, games, music, crafts, educational demonstrations and team-building, it was soon recognized that ongoing contact with the youth would have a greater impact. Therefore, the program evolved to add events during the school year, including a movie matinee, sports, cosmic bowling and art gallery visits. Increased contact through these events allows relationships formed at the camp to remain intact throughout the school year. Both the initial camp and subsequent events foster lasting, positive affiliations between local police and our youth.

The Cops ’n Kids program is made possible through the generosity of sponsors, dedication of volunteers and participation from the youth who are selected for the program. As they progress through the year, seeing the kids blossom, learn new skills, gain confidence and make new friends says it all; the program makes a difference in their lives!
