Effective November 16, 2012, Sgt. Scott MacDonald has been appointed HRM's Public Safety Officer on an interim basis.
Sgt. MacDonald replaces Superintendent Don Spicer who retired November 16 after more than 34 1/2 years in policing. Sgt. MacDonald has reported to Supt. Spicer for the past 3 1/2 years and worked alongside him on many public safety initiatives. As a result, Sgt. MacDonald has a keen sense of the position and its partnerships. |

Halifax
Regional Police launched a violence against women awareness campaign as part of
Sexual Assault Awareness Month in May.
The HRM Public Safety Office was created in March 2009 in response to the Mayor's Roundtable on Violence Report.
Its primary responsibilities are to:

strengthen existing partnerships and foster new ones with the various levels of government, social agencies, educational institutions, business associations and community/citizens’ groups to ensure a coordinated and holistic approach to address the root causes of crime and enhance public safety.
- lead and direct a coordinated response to the Mayor’s Roundtable Report recommendations.
The HRM Public Safety Office falls within the purview of Halifax Regional Police, under the direction of Sgt. Scott MacDonald, HRM's Interim Public Safety Officer.
