Found Pets
Animal Services picks up hundreds of lost pets each year.
Reuniting a lost dog with its family is simple if the dog is wearing an HRM license tag. If your dog is wearing its license tag when it is picked up, Animal Services will make every effort to contact you to advise that your dog has been found.
Lost dogs with no identification are held by Animal Services for three business days before being turned over to the contracted shelter.
To retrieve a pet from Animal Services, pet owners must:
- contact Animal Services at 490-4000 or 1-800- 835-6428 (toll free in Nova Scotia only) to make arrangements to pick up their pet.
- provide personal photo identification, ie. driver's license.
- provide proof of pet ownership, ie. photos, papers from your vet, a purchase receipt.
It will not be possible to retrieve your pet if:
- Animal Services has determined that allowing your pet to remain in your care would compromise public safety.
Impound and boarding fees are charged to cover the cost of:
- sending an Animal Services officer to investigate a complaint.
- apprehending and transporting an animal to the contracted shelter.
- examining the animal for any injuries or health concerns, and arranging for treatment if necessary.
- attempting to locate the pet's owner.
- providing food and water, and safe and comfortable shelter for the pet.
