This time of year, Halifax Regional Police often see an increase in complaints regarding youth in and around public parks and open spaces. The following information outlines activities and behaviours that are not permitted in our public green areas.
HRM By-Law P-600 Respecting Municipal Parks applies to "any land owned, leased, or controlled by Halifax Regional Municipality, designated or used as parkland or as a trail, including gardens, playgrounds, sportsfields, and beach areas."
Unless given permission, the activities listed below are prohibited:
- destroying flora and fauna, park facilities, equipment or signs
- engaging in violent or threatening conduct
- lighting open fires
- possessing firearms and offensive weapons
- disposing of or dumping garbage which is not generated through normal use of the park
- camping, unless otherwise posted
- erecting or placing anything in the park for the purpose of temporary or permanent accommodations
- operating vehicles in the park, except wheelchairs and bicycles unless posted
- vending refreshments or other merchandise, etc., without written consent
- being in a park between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m.

Park users who violate HRM By-Law P-600 may receive a $222 fine.
NS Protection of Property Act, Section 3(1) states that unless given permission by the occupier, it is an offence for anyone to:
- enter a premises if notice prohibiting entry is posted
- engage in an activity if notice prohibiting the activity is posted
Individuals who violate Section 3(1) may receive a $222 fine.
NS Liquor Control Act, Section 87(1) prohibits intoxication in a public place.
Individuals who violate Section 87(1) may be incarcerated or receive a $118.50 fine. The fine for Underage Consumption of Liquor and Illegal Possession is $452.
Criminal Code of Canada, Section 175(1) prohibits creating a disturbance in or near a public place by:
- fighting, screaming, shouting, singing or using insulting or obscene language
- being drunk
- impeding or molesting other persons
Individuals who violate Section 175(1) may be incarcerated or receive a fine.
