Losses from shoplifting seriously affect retailers whose profits are reduced, sales associates whose pay and hours can be affected, and consumers who pay for these losses through inflated prices.
Here are some tips to try to decrease, prevent and/or deter a person from shoplifting in your store:
- Watch your customers. The ones who actually plan to pay for something will be looking at the products while someone thinking about stealing is looking around at people.
- Pay particular attention to people with large coats, shopping bags and oversized purses.
- Don’t give a thief a hiding spot. Arrange your cash and aisles to facilitate your sales associates with clear sightlines. The proper use of mirrors should open up isolated areas. Cameras can also deter theft when used correctly.
- Small and high-value items should be kept in locked cabinets.
