Quality Assurance Readers
This section is an integrated HRP/RCMP section staffed by eight Sergeants. The officers are responsible for the quality and integrity of all police reports. This means the officers work to ensure standards are met and the procedures of each preliminary investigation are in place. As reports are generated on the records management system they are sent to the Quality Assurance Readers to be reviewed.
It is at this point that the Quality Assurance Readers determine which reports require follow-up and which specialized section is most appropriate to conduct the investigation. Once the section is determined, the report is then routed to a specific investigator in the specialized section.
Investigative Call Back Unit
The Investigative Call Back Unit is responsible for making telephone contact with clients to ensure pertinent information has been obtained and questions have been answered by both the police and their clients. This two-way communication allows both the police and the public to move forward with investigations in an informed manner.
Crime Analysis
Halifax Regional Police employs a number of computer and statistical analysis to track crime trends in our jurisdiction. A computer program allows police to plot incidents and run statistical comparisons at the click of a mouse.
Crime Stoppers
Not only does Crime Stoppers assist HRP in re-creating crimes, but it also accepts tips anonymously and passes these tips on to officers to aid in investigations.
Since the program's inception, Crime Stoppers has helped solve many serious crimes and has played a significant role in identifying criminals and bringing them to justice.
With today’s shifting emphasis to community-based policing and related programs, Crime Stoppers serves as a perfect example of community involvement and its desire to fight crime.

Polygraph
The Polygraph Unit is currently staffed by one full-time Polygraph Technician who provides testing to both external and internal clients.
Polygraph services are utilized both in criminal investigations and in the day-to-day administration of police work. As a law enforcement agency, our services are highly confidential and therefore we polygraph all of our potential employees, both sworn and civilian.
Forensic Identification Unit

Identification technicians respond to thousands of calls for service each year. Their services are utilized in many areas of policing including homicides, break and enters, stolen vehicles, thefts, assaults and robberies.
Currently one fully-trained Blood Splatter Analyst is on staff, and is part of a joint section with the RCMP. The officers are trained to collect, maintain and store DNA evidence, to maintain the highest level of evidence integrity as the use of new science is becoming more and more important in crime-solving.
National Weapons Enforcement Support Team (NWEST)
The National Weapons Enforcement Support Team (NWEST) is a partnership of RCMP/provincial/municipal police service members who are strategically located throughout Canada. Its members are committed to supporting front-line police/public agencies in the gathering of evidence to assist them in successfully prosecuting persons involved in the illegal movement and criminal use of firearms.
NWEST officers provide a range of expertise in a number of areas, including but not limited to: firearms information and guidance, investigative advice, firearms identification and classification, serial number recovery and tracing services, and gathering and sharing of firearms intelligence.
