In 1998 Halifax Regional Municipality placed the School Crossing Guard program under the direction of Halifax Regional Police. 

There are approximately 165 full-time Crossing Guards who monitor 147 crosswalks.  These Guards work 3 1/2 hours per day and the hours vary depending on the hours of the school associated with the crosswalk.

In September 2005, Halifax Regional Police was honoured as Employer of the Year by Connections Clubhouse, a mental health rehabilitation program that is part of the QEII Health Services.  The award recognized HRP for our openness and commitment to hiring persons who have experienced mental illness.
