Applicants must remember that they are competing with others for employment. The caliber of our recruits is superior and you must be prepared for the competitive nature of the process.
Applicants will have a pre-determined timeframe to complete a cognitive ability test. The test is based on Grade 12 English grammar, spelling, composition, comprehension and mathematics. It is Pass or Fail. All applicants meeting the minimum acceptable score will proceed to the next stage of testing.
Applicants must complete the Physical Abilities Requirement Evaluation (PARE). The minimum standard is 4 minutes and 45 seconds for Cadets and 4 minutes for Experienced Police officers. HRP is interested in candidates who are competitive so it is important to complete the PARE with your best personal time. Achievement of the minimum standard may prevent your advancement to other stages.
At the end of the physical testing phase, candidates will be issued a pre-employment polygraph booklet to complete and return to Human Resources. Candidates must answer all questions accurately, honestly and with approximate timelines. Deceit, dishonesty or non-disclosure will result in elimination of the candidate's application. Human Resources staff will review the sections pertaining to lifestyle and integrity and determine if the candidate will move forward to the Board Interview.
The interview is designed to have applicants draw examples from their past work or life experience to demonstrate that they possess the necessary competencies to be a member of Halifax Regional Police.
HRP competencies are: Adaptability, Ethical Accountability and Responsibility, Interactive Communication, Organizational Awareness, Problem Solving, Risk Management, Stress Tolerance, Teamwork and Written Skills.
All individuals employed with HRP are required to successfully meet our security clearance standards. Candidates who are successful in the board interview may be given an appointment for a pre-employment polygraph examination.
The pre-employment polygraph examination is conducted by a member trained and certified in the use of the polygraph instrument.
Applicants must successfully meet the medical standards set by Halifax Regional Police and Province of Nova Scotia. The applicant will bear the cost of the medical exam, approximately $150.00.
Applicants will be thoroughly investigated to determine if they are suited for a position with HRP. Visits to applicants' family and friends may be conducted during this stage.
Applicants must undergo psychological testing to determine if they are suitable to be a police officer with Halifax Regional Police. The applicant bears the cost of the testing ($650.00).
Successful applicants will receive a verbal and written offer.
