Pollution Prevention at Home

Recently released studies have indicated that chemicals found in pharmaceuticals, medications, contraceptives, beauty aids, perfumes as well as insect repellent, caffeine, nicotine and other compounds are being detected in many major fresh water systems throughout North America.

These compounds may pass through most municipal sewage treatment plants and enter into the natural environment.

Unused pharmaceuticals, medications and other personal care products should not be disposed of down your sink drains or in the toilet.  Return unused pharmaceuticals or medications to your pharmacy or the Household Hazardous Waste Depot located at 50 Chain Lake Drive, Bayers Lake Business Park (open on selected Saturdays, call 490-4000 for further information).

It is hoped that as residents and businesses support HRM’s Pollution Prevention Program by reducing the discharge to sewers, support the use of environmentally friendly products, recycle, reuse and dispose of wastes in a responsible manner that we will all play a direct role in protecting our freshwater resources as well as the marine environment of our harbour.

Should you have any questions or comments, please direct inquires to the Pollution Prevention Office.
