Investigation & Studies
In 2005/2006, the following wastewater management studies were completed:
  • Eastern Passage Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP)Sewershed - The primary focus is the pre-design of the Eastern Passage WWTP, but we will be also looking at other issues, such as infrastructure requirements to support growth opportunities pursuant to the Regional Plan, possible transfer of wastewater from Belmont WWTP (and elimination of this plant), and wet weather flow and overflow issues in the sewershed.  Capital cost for the WWTP expansion and upgrade and transfer of wastewater from Belmont, including phase-out, is estimated at $25 million.

  • Proposed Halifax WWTP Sewershed - The focus is the reduction of combined sewer overflows, and may include the rehabilitation or replacement of the North West Arm Sewer, as well as other management opportunities within the sewershed in support of the Halifax Harbour Solutions Project.
  • Mill Cove WWTP Sewershed - Priorities here are wet weather overflows in the Mill Cove WWTP sewershed, resulting in environmental impacts and limitations on growth opportunities. This project may eliminate Lively Subdivision WWTP, Springfield Lake WWTP and Uplands Park WWTP.

Each of the wastewater management studies will involve modelling of the major system components in the sewershed, flow monitoring, identification of infrastructure and upgrade and expansion requirements (including those required to support the Regional Plan), wet weather flow control, data collection to augment our SWID Project, and other relevant opportunities.
  • Pumping Station and Force Main Study - This study has been completed, focussing on the priority 50 wastewater Pumping Stations in HRM.  Staff have used a ranking process to identify priority stations for capital work with 24 of the top priority projects currently at one of the following several stages of implementation: pre-design, design, construction or already completed.
