Halifax Water's wastewater infrastructure includes various components such as sanitary sewers, manholes, force mains, pumping stations and wastewater treatment plants. The stormwater system also includes various components such as storm sewers, manholes, catchbasins, ditches, culverts and stormwater retention ponds.

The primary responsibilities of Environmental Services in terms of the management of wastewater and stormwater infrastructure are as follows:

  • Manage Halifax Water's wastewater and stormwater systems to ensure the systems are effectively and efficiently used and that the operating and maintenance and other costs related to these systems are recovered in a fair and equitable manner from the users of these systems;
  • Improve the system performance through the implementation of such programs as Infiltration/Inflow reduction and Source Control (Pollution Prevention);
  • Respond to citizen's complaints and investigate wastewater, stormwater and environmental problems.
