Real Estate & Facility Services is responsible for the operation and property maintenance of HRM owned and leased properties and buildings, the delivery of acquisition and disposal services on behalf of the organization for municipal purposes, real estate advisory services, and the development and sale of HRM's Business Parks lots.

Our unit is made up of three specialized groups, which include a specialist team of policy, planning, design, and administrative support staff. We work with many other business units within HRM to assist with their purchase, sale and leasing requirements.

At a Glance

  • Annual Operating Budget $13 M

  • 15 Full-time employees

  • 2M (+/-) square feet of building space

  • Facility Services spends about $20 million a year, and processes over 15,000 work orders annually, to maintain over 2M sq. ft. of building space, with a plant replacement value in excess of 750M dollars
  • Building maintenance services to over 80 HRM facilities including Recreation Centres, Police, Fire, and Transit through in-house and contracted services
  • HRM owns 300+ buildings - less than 100 are either leased, or are on hold pending their sale or disposal; the rest are used by HRM for municipal purposes

  • 825 park properties, with approximately 120 new parks added on an annual basis - largest park 4200 acres; smallest park 2800 sq. ft.
  • HRM maintains 600 operational vehicles; 800 pieces of small equipment; 178 buses, 17 access-a-buses and 3 ferries, 200 police vehicles, and 271 fire vehicles

  • There are five (5) Business and Industrial Parks housing 1800+ companies. Burnside Park, home to 1500+ businesses, is the largest business park east of Montreal and north of Boston

  • Real Property assessment for HRM owned Business Parks hit $800M creating annual real property taxes of $27M

  • Over 50+ land transactions managed and completed
  • Over 135 acres of capital property acquired in the last three years to support Municipal requirements

  • Over 200K sq. ft. of space leased or renewed valued at $250,000 per annum
