Becoming more physically active is easier than you think! Start slowly by adding physical activities that you enjoy into your daily routine and build your way up to 30-60 minutes of moderate activity each day. Starting slowly is very safe for most people. Active Living at Work

  • Choose smart ways to commute. Learn the benefits and what's available for you to commute to work. Visit Smart Trip.
  • Whether the reason is to get there fast, fun, or for a challenging workout click here for information, maps and tips to design the best route for you.
  • Encourage co-workers to go for a short, but brisk walk/wheel at lunch or break.
  • Walk your kids to daycare, school, or a friend’s house.
  • Ask your co-workers to participate in a community charity walk.
  • Join or organize a recreation softball or soccer team at work and join a league.
  • Instead of driving to meetings, walk or wheel to meet at your favourite hangout.

Active Living at Play

  • Visit one of the many spectacular trails around HRM. Go bird watching, hiking, biking, walking… Get out… check it out!  
  • Have a picnic and play a game of tag or hide n' go seek at your local parks or playgrounds. To find parks and playgrounds in your area visit What do you want to do in HRM?
  • When watching your kids play sports, instead of sitting on the sidelines, walk around the field/stadiums.
  • Go geocaching with your walking group and enjoy the scenery. For more info on starting or joining a walking group visit www.walkaboutns.ca
  • Play and swim at one of HRM’s many supervised beaches. Don’t forget your sun screen and beach toys. Visit Beaches, Lakes, & Outdoor Pools
  • Try an outdoor workout at one of HRM’s free outdoor gyms (Dartmouth Common, Fall River).
  • Contact your local community center to learn about open gym times for youth.
  • Attend community events that offer physical activity opportunities -you’ll be sure to get moving with music, entertainment, and fun for all ages HRM Civic Events
  • Participate in HRM Bike Week. No matter what your skill level there is something for everyone.

Active Living around Home

  • Go out and play with your kids or grandkids–  play catch, shoot hoops, skip rope, hopscotch or hula hoop.
  • Get involved in your neighbour. Organize or participate in a neighbourhood clean up or block party.  www.myhrm.ca
  • Help the family rake the leaves. Create piles of leaves to jump over! 
  • Reach, dig and pull while doing your yard work or gardening.
  • Avoid the puddles while taking a rainy day walk or wheel… umbrella optional.
