March Break Recreation Program Instructor (March Break Only)

Position Summary:

The Halifax Regional Municipality invites you to apply for the position of Recreation Program Instructor for the March Break period of March 11 to 15, 2013.

The Recreation Program Instructor designs and leads recreation programs for a variety of age groups. Supports persons with disabilities in programs (e.g. personal care, lifting procedures, adapting activities, administering medications, etc.) - may be required to develop a specific plan.

Responsible for daily duties such as greeting participants, leading activities, ensuring the safety and enjoyment of participants, organizing equipment and supplies, preparing for activities, distributing and collecting permission slips for outings, organizing outings, participating in staff meetings, etc

Basic Qualifications:

  • At least one season/summer of experience working or volunteering with preschoolers/children/youth in a recreational setting.

Conditions of Employment:

Current certification in Emergency First Aid and Level B CPR. Screening through the Child Abuse Registry and if applicable, a Police Records Check.


Wage Range:  $10.25 to $11.00 (plus 4% vacation pay) based on experience                      

Hours of Work: ). Must be willing to work a flexible work schedule.
Typical hours of work are between 9:00 am and 4:00 pm (different recreation centres may have different hours). Max: 35 hours for the March Break week.

Halifax Regional Municipality is inviting applications for part-time positions of Recreation Program Instructors for our Fall/Winter/Spring programs. The Recreation Program Instructor leads recreation programs for a variety of age groups at various locations throughout the Municipality. These job opportunities are a perfect way for you to gain valuable work experience, learn new skills and contribute to your community.

We are seeking individuals wishing to work be instructors for the following age groups:

Adult & Senior Programs
Youth Programs (Ages 13 to 18)
Children Programs (Elementary Age)
Pre-School Age Programs

We are seeking individuals looking for PART TIME seasonal work. Individuals would be required to plan and lead various recreation instructional programs (such as children’s sports and play programs, adult fitness, craft and wellness programs as well as various preschool programs, youth programs and activities.

Summary of Duties:

  • Responsible for developing a specific program plan.
  • Supports persons with disabilities in programs (e.g. personal care, lifting procedures, adapting activities, etc).
  • Responsible for greeting participants, leading activities, ensuring the safety and enjoyment of participants, organizing equipment and supplies, preparing for activities.
  • Reports to the Recreation Program Coordinator in a specific geographic area or recreation centre

Basic Qualifications:

  • Experience working or volunteering with preschoolers/children/youth/seniors in a recreational setting (if applicable).
  • For specialty positions (ie. Tennis, Gymnastics, Skating and Fitness including Yoga, Pilates, etc.) Candidates must have appropriate certification and/or skill set (contact your local Community Recreation Centre for further details).

Conditions of Employment:

  • Applicants must have current certification in Emergency First Aid and Level B CPR.
  • Applicants must complete screening through the Child Abuse Registry and if applicable, a Police Records Check.
  • Applicants must be willing to obtain HIGH FIVE training and WHMIS training if applicable.

Hours of work:
Casually/Seasonally, September through May, contingent upon program registration.

Hours of work varies per program. Mondays to Fridays and possibly weekends. Program offerings have a wide variety of times and depend on age, ability and activity. Some applicants may be considered to instruct one or more program per week, depending on qualifications

Wage Range: Wage will vary based on HRM Recreation Wage Scale, Certification and Experience.
