50 Things to do in HRM in the Winter

Winter may be staying put
for a couple of months,

But it doesn't mean that you should...

Most Canadians tend to slow down a bit and hibernate duing the winter season, but this year-- turn things around.  One great way to turn up the heat is to get moving and get active!

Health Canada recommends 60 -90 minutes of accumulated physical activity everyday ~ it may seem like a lot, but it all adds up.

So, don't Hibernate! Participate!

The next 45 ways to have fun

  1. Pull on your boots…walk to work or school.
  2. Go bowling.
  3. Challenge your neighbours to a snowman making contest.
  4. Start your spring cleaning early.
  5. Play “snoccer” (soccer in the snow).
  6. Walk a dog.
  7. Make snow angels
  8. Join a dance class with a friend or partner: try hip hop, salsa, or belly dancing.
  9. Make shovelling your driveway a family affair.  Warm-up first!
  10. Check out a local museum or tourist attraction.
  11. Check out your local recreation centre for basketball, volleyball, or badminton.
  12. Build a snow fort or igloo (without a roof).
  13. Take a heart pumping walk for 30 minutes.
  14. Play Snowman Tag.
  15. Play outdoor hockey.
  16. Turn on the radio and dance!
  17. Rent some cross-country skis or snowshoes.
  18. Go swimming at your local pool.
  19. Action TV: Do sit-ups or jumping jacks, and climb stairs during commercials.
  20. Make a snowman or snow sculptures.
  21. Rediscover your local park this winter.
  22. Grab a helmet and go tobogganing.
  23. Bundle up and go bird watching.
  24. Check out an indoor walking track or mall- walking program. Invite an elderly neighbour.
  25. Get your feet wet . . . take an Aquafit class or try water running.
  26. Try a new winter activity, such as curling or broomball.
  27. Have a picnic in the snow.
  28. Walk to the library and get a book.
  29. Go window shopping.
  30. Turn off the TV and video games. Go outside and play!
  31. Take the blankets off the bed and play parachute games.
  32. Learn some new moves: try tai chi or taekwondo. 
  33. Have a ball in the snow: throw, catch, kick or roll!
  34. Have a family game of “Twister”.
  35. Organize a scavenger hunt.
  36. Enrol your children in team sports and volunteer to coach.
  37. Vacuum with vigour!
  38. Toss a Frisbee in the snow.
  39. Take a moonlight or flashlight walk in the evening.  Go stargazing.
  40. Organize a game of “snow pitch”.
  41. Put a new spin on tobogganing: try snow tubing.
  42. Its all down hill from here: strap on your downhill skis or try snow boarding!
