Organizing a Neighbourhood Litter Cleanup?

Clean Nova Scotia and Halifax Regional Municipality can help!

The Great Nova Scotia Pick-Me-Up is a program coordinated by Clean Foundation and supported in part by HRM to encourage Nova Scotians to get together to pick up litter.

How to Get Involved?

All you have to do is select an area you would like to clean, gather a group of people (friends, family, coworkers, schoolmates etc.) and then register your cleanup with Clean Foundation.

What's in it for me?

You are being a positive force in the fight against litter and benefit from a cleaner neighbourhood or beach.

Clean Foundation will provide you with a free cleanup kit. The kit includes an information booklet, safety tips, advertising posters, an appropriate amount of garbage bags and recycling bags and a data card that you can use to keep track of what types of litter you find. It includes everything you will need to have a great Pick-Me-Up.

When can I do my Pick-Me-Up?

Pick-Me-Up's are usually done in the spring. This way, it’s easy to see what’s been hiding under the snow. However, any time of year is a good time. Litter is a year-long problem that needs your attention as much as possible.

How do I register?

Register online: Great NS Pick Me Up:

Clean Foundation
126 Portland Street
Dartmouth, NS B2Y 1H8
Phone: 902-420-3474

When you register with Clean Foundation and receive your free Pick-Me-Up kit, it will include a data card (you will receive an information booklet when you register that outlines the importance of the data card and how to send it back) to record what you have collected. The data card is important to Clean Foundation as it helps them track waste-producing trends and it also helps them get funding necessary to support this program – so don’t forget to send it back in when you are done!

How do I dispose of the litter my groups collects?

  1. Garbage and recycling can be disposed of by dividing it among participants and placing it curbside with your household waste. Please note: This material will count towards the current limit 6 garbage bags per single unit household and sorting rules still apply (ie clear bags for garbage). There is no limit for recyclables.

  2. Contact Clean Foundation (420-3474) two weeks prior to your event to arrange for onsite collection of bagged waste. This is especially important if you have special requirements (e.g. large amounts.)

  3. Contact Clean Foundation (420-3474) two weeks prior to your event if you would like to deliver collected garbage directly to the Otter Lake Waste Processing and Disposal Facility. Your event must be registered with Clean Foundation for tipping fees to be waived.
