Public Comments on
~ Halifax Harbour ~

Cole Harbour Place - May 19, 2004

  • More board walks along the harbour on Dartmouth side (*2). Connect to Trans Canada Trail
  • Remember - we need people living on the harbour side
  • Maintain public access along waterfront
  • Maintain public access on both sides of lakes & harbour

Michael Wallace Elementary School, Dartmouth - May 20, 2004

  • It should be crystal clean and clear
  • It should be cleaner, get it clean
  • There should be more parks

St. Margaret's Centre, Upper Tantallon - May 26, 2004

  • Every container unloaded in Halifax Harbour that travels by rail must exit through Bedford, this needs to be looked at.
  • Better sewage treatment! Solar aquatics needed. Existing toxic controls extremely poor. Zero toxic discharge is the current best available practice. Do it! Anything less than no net degradation is degradation. Stop degrading our world and habitat! Need aquarium! Stop the needle tower from piercing the heart of our harbour. It is not appropriate. It will cause harm!

Brookside Junior High School, Hatchett Lake - May 31, 2004

  • Stop the stupidity of building residential and other non-harbour related commercial property on waterfront of Halifax Harbour
  • The harbour solutions should have been studied 40 years ago
  • Absolutely not the mini CN Tower idea. No CN Tower like in Halifax - we are not Toronto.

Four Harbours Legion, East Ship Harbour - June 2, 2004

  • Once harbour solutions are in place, pipes might be able to be extended to Cherry Book and East Preston

Sackville High School, Lower Sackville - June 7, 2004

  • Sewer treatment plants to be 2nd treatment.
  • Stop sewer overflow!
  • Move Halifax Harbour commercial to Ship Harbour
  • Ferry or rail a must
  • Harbour to include all watersheds draining into harbour
  • B.A.T.H - Boardwalk Around The Harbour!
  • We must start to restore our harbour

Basinview Drive Community School, Bedford - June 9, 2004

  • Maximize benefits of the harbour by stopping infilling in Bedford Basin (*2)
  • Re-visit plan for Birch Cove Marine Park. Stop residential development on the harbour
  • Ferry route with several stops in Bedford Basin from downtown, like Hamilton Harbour in Bermuda
  • Definitely need to expand trails along harbour and basin shore. I would like to see more events held on the waterfront in September. I think that much more development on the waterfront is going to ruin it!

Halifax City Hall - June 17, 2004

  • Smaller and more frequent public transit and ferries
  • Don't waste time on a grandiose ferry to Purcell's Cove. We need smaller ferries not 200 plus passenger ones
  • Small ferry taxis for transport across and along the harbour
  • I would like to see access to George's Island by public tours. I would like to see if Parks Canada can finish restoring the site - perhaps a joint partner may be necessary
  • More ferry terminals would be a good idea
  • The harbour is a beautiful and valuable asset, make use of it's potential, especially for transportation

St. Agnes Church, Halifax - June 21, 2004

  • Keep waterfront for people, accessible, views, concerts
  • Where are all the yachts coming from?
  • Walking trail around entire harbour
  • The Halifax Harbour should look clean and healthy and cool
  • Harbour is for ships, navy, and people
  • Yes, we should plan for more parks and trails along the harbour shores. Consider how accessible the harbour/ocean is from downtown Victoria, B.C. The inaccessibility of Halifax Harbour to the ocean is a disappointment
  • I agree, water as transport link, across Arm for instance
