HRM's Economy

Halifax HarbourThe Regional Plan will determine what locations are regionally significant to support economic expansions and the infrastructure needed to support these assets.

Our skilled and educated workforce, competitive location, vibrant downtown, beautiful environment and excellent quality of life present national and international opportunities for economic prosperity in the region.

Research shows that HRM is poised for future economic growth in both the service and industrial sector. Currently, 85% of jobs in HRM are in the service sector and this sector is expected to see the strongest growth over the next few years.

Downtown DartmouthThe Downtown Halifax, Downtown Dartmouth and Spring Garden Road, Quinpool Road and Gottingen Street areas, make up HRM's Capital District. It's the economic, cultural, and political centre of the region and the established central business district for office commerce and business activity.

Approximately 56% of HRM citizens are employed in the Capital District or in immediately adjacent areas. The Capital District is essential in growing the region's tourism, offshore, and port operations.

Suburban and rural commercial centres are also important to the regional economy. The plan will ensure that these local centres are recognized as vital to the health and sustainability of our region.
