Regional Planning

Settlement Pattern & Community Form

The Regional Plan will identify where HRM should encourage residential growth over the next 25 years.

Residential BuildingThe Conference Board of Canada estimates an increase of up to 100,000 new residents in the region by 2026. The time is now to plan for a settlement pattern that we, as a region, can sustain. We must make decisions about how and where we will grow over the longer term.

Opportunities for change

Bike TrailThe amount of land being developed in HRM has more than doubled since 1960.

Lot sizes are becoming larger as people move further from the urban core. This uses land less efficiently, so the costs of development, such as roads and other services, increase.

The Regional Planning process will explore opportunities for change that provide a balance of lifestyle choices and a reduction in the need for new and expanded infrastructure.
