Transportation
The regional planning process will determine what type of transportation investment we need to match our growth and citizen's lifestyles.
Transportation is a critical part of the regional plan because it directly and indirectly impacts:
- the ability for people to access jobs, schools, shopping & recreation
- land consumption
- air quality
- the region's economic vitality

The type of transportation investment we need or want will depend on:
- where we grow
- our form of growth
- where employment & resource centres are located
HRM residents have shown that they are willing to choose alternatives to driving. According to a Statistics Canada ranking of all Canadian metro areas, HRM tied for first with the highest percentage of people walking to work.
We also ranked 3rd highest in vehicles travelling to work with passengers and 5th with our low percentage of people driving to work.
Currently, Regional Planning is initiating a transportation corridor study to review potential solutions to the issues we face. This includes cost comparisons of various transit solutions (i.e. bus, ferry, train) and population bases needed to sustain them.
As part of the Regional Plan, HRM is also participating Transport Canada's Urban Transportation Showcase Program. The program showcases and offers funding to transportation projects that reduce greenhouse gases. Halifax is one of 15 cities to be short-listed for the program.
