Background
Last year, the Municipality approved in principle, the recommendations of the Land Use Planning Study: Western Shore of Bedford Basin. One of the study recommendations was to undertake a more detailed design study for lands at Birch Cove and in the vicinity of the intersection of Kearney Lake Road and Bedford Highway.

The Municipality issued a Request for Proposals (RFP) to lead the design study on October 25, 2008. A contract was awarded to a consulting team headed by Ekistics.
Waterfront Development Corporation, a provincial crown corporation with a mandate to champion provincial interests for lands around Halifax Harbour and the Bedford Basin has agreed to cost-share in this study.
Public Participation
The Municipality has also approved a public participation program for this study. A steering committee, comprised of community representatives, property owners, Waterfront Development Corporation and the district councillor will oversee the study and public participation program. Opportunities for community involvement will be through workshops and public meetings.
A public workshop was held in April to gather ideas followed by a survey.
Alternative Design Options
A design brief with three alternative design options for the Birch Cove Waterfront Area was presented to the public on June 18th at St. Peter’s Anglican Church. Click here for minutes of the meeting.
Steering Committee Meetings
The Steering Committee has met on an adhoc basis since the study was initiated. Meetings are open to the public and requests to speak can be entertained at the discretion of the committee. The approved minutes are presented as follows:
