1. Are bicycle helmets permitted during the winter season?
CSA approved, multi impact helmets are required for all children 12 years of age and under. Adults can wear bicycle helmets when there is an ice surface as they are technically not required to wear a helmet. However, the use of a CSA approved, multi impact helmet is encouraged for adults too.

2. If I bring my child in a stroller is a helmet required?
Yes, if you have a child on the ice in a stroller they must wear a helmet. The adult pushing the stroller must also wear a helmet.

3. What is the age limit for having to wear a helmet
All children 12 years of age and under must wear a CSA, multi impact helmet.

4. How often is the skate schedule updated?
The skate schedule is updated daily to reflect any changes due to inclement weather.

5. Is the Emera Oval available to rent for private functions?
No, the Emera Oval space is not avaiable for rent during the winter season while there is an ice surface.

6. Should I call or email prior to bringing a large group of over 20 people to skate where skate rentals are required?
Yes, you can send an email to skatehrm@halifax.ca and let us know your group size or any special requirements that may be needed (ie sledges).

9. Am I able to carry my baby on the ice in a baby carrier?
Due to safety reasons babies/children are not permitted to be held in carriers while skating.


Winter Skating Rules & Regulation

• Participation at the Emera Oval is at your own risk.
• The Emera Oval and the municipality are not responsible for any accident, injury, loss or damage.
• Participants, 12 and under, must wear a helmet. If borrowing equipment from the site users can borrow one of the Emera Oval's multi-impact helmets too.
• Skaters should use appropriate speed during public sessions.
• Slower skaters use outside lane, faster skaters use inside lane.
• Hockey sticks and pucks are not permitted on the Emera Oval
• Strollers are allowed on the Emera Oval during public skate times as long as both the child and the adult pushing the stroller are wearing helmets.
• Dogs are not permitted on the skating surface, and must be on a leash at all times while on the Emera Oval site.
• Skate in a counter clockwise direction at all times.
• Do not loiter in areas that may block major traffic flow.
• Follow the directions from the skate monitors at all times.
