Provincial Winter Parking Ban

Provincial legislation (Section 139 of the Motor Vehicle Act) requires that people remove their vehicles from the streets, day or night, in the event of a snow or ice event. Vehicles obstructing snow removal or winter maintenance operations can be removed at the owner’s cost, regardless of time or date.

When should I move my vehicle?

It's best to play it safe and not take the chance when snow is in the forecast. Even if it hasn't been forecast and it starts to snow, you could potentially be interfering with operations. Make sure you have secured off-street parking and remove your vehicle from the street in advance.

There is no specific timeframe for getting your vehicle off the street during a storm. The Provincial ban is enforced from Dec. 15 - March 31.

HRM's Overnight Winter Parking Ban

Having an overnight winter parking ban in place allows for a proactive approach to operations. Because traffic isn't as heavy during the overnight hours, snow clearing and winter maintenance can be done in a more efficient and effective way and this will help crews meet service delivery standards for snow removal.

HRM’s Traffic Authority is implementing a one-year trial period for an amended overnight winter parking ban. The changes are intended to offer some flexibility to those who are most affected by the ban, such as shift workers and business owners, without compromising HRM’s snow and ice clearing operations.

This year, the overnight parking regulations, which can be implemented anytime between Dec. 15 and March 31, will only be enforced during declared snow and ice operations and will run from 1 a.m. to 6 a.m.

Weather conditions and clearing operations will determine how long an overnight ban will be in effect. HRM will issue public service announcements to alert the public when the ban is in effect and when it has been lifted and timely information will be posted on www.halifax.ca.
